What is a designer dog? The media has labeled these hybrid dogs as “designer”. A purebred dog is one that has been bred over many generations to breed “true” meaning that each puppy born looks and has the same temperament as one another. So what’s the difference between a mutt and a designer breed? Well a mutt is of uncertain ancestry while a designer breed has documented purebred ancestry and the breeder knows exactly what it is.
There are different designer breeds with different combinations of purebreds and there are different generations of designer breeds.
An F1 designer puppy comes from two different purebred parents. So this puppy will have 50% one breed and 50% of the other breed. An F1 Labradoodle for example which is a Labrador and Poodle mix, will have half Labrador characteristics and half Poodle characteristics.
An F2 puppy is a second generation puppy. It is a cross between two F1 parents
An F3 puppy is a cross between two F2 parents.
The first designer breed was the Labradoodle. It first came about in the 1980s when the Australian Guide Dog Association wanted to breed a dog that would suit allergy sufferers. Poodles were crossed with Labradors in the hope that the Wool non-shedding coat of the Poodle would be hypoallergenic. Soon other positive traits were found and the popularity of this wonderful breed grew.
There is a rivalry between purebred breeders and designer dog breeders but the bottom line is they are all dog lovers and depending on what your needs are a purebred is no better or worse than a designer breed. Both Purebreds and Designer breeds bring joy to a person’s life and deserve to be spoilt and loved.
